THE SHORT VERSION:
I bake, you buy, and $1 of every purchase of $12 goes to charities such as the
ASPCA, Equality Now, and the Human Rights Campaign.
It's that simple and that easy to spread a little bit of love to
other people, animals, and in turn, our Mother Earth.
THE LONG VERSION:
Born in Louisiana and raised in east Tennessee, I've always had a love for baking and baked goods (and let's be honest, anything else with a lot of butter and sugar in it!) but I was not inspired to be a baker like most. My mother is an awesome cook and my dad is a master griller but I not only did NOT want to be in the kitchen as a young person--and I did pretty much everything but. By the time high school hit, I was taking several dance classes a week with a local ballet company, involved in my marching band rehearsals and every Friday night football performances, working my tush off to excel in all of my ever challenging academic classes, competing in forensics, and singing with the school's very well known choir program. (Yeah, let's be honest, I didn't go on one date until I went to college...) Needless to say, when I went to college, I majored in musical theatre. Afterward, I soon moved to the Big Apple, met my now husband, and loved living our lives "in the business". I felt (and still do!) invigorated by every job prospect and as an extreme extrovert, networking opportunities only fueled the fire. I loved our friends and truly living the New York City life a exuberant 20's something.
But shortly after our winter New Orleans wedding and after my 29th birthday, I was suddenly aware of my surroundings. As a person who constantly is a 'here and now' kind of personality, I could plan for the future if need be, but felt alive when considering what I was going to do the near future or that day. Perhaps it was my foot injury that forced me slow down, the realization that we were not meant to live in New York City our whole lives and move to California, or the sudden education I received about how terrible and PLAIN AWFUL plastic is for our Mother Earth--but I was overcome with emotions by the fact that I was doing nothing to help others or the environment.
And this feeling didn't go away. I started to see our carbon footprint in coworkers who threw out a plastic cup from a venti coffee, the lack of effort in people to help others when a barefoot homeless person in 10 degree weather asked for food on the subway, and the lack of green space on every corner I turned in our concrete jungle. In fact, I realized that I was doing nothing for anyone but me. I mean, yes, I like to think of myself as a thoughtful person--I love my friends and family, would walk the Earth for anything for my husband, but how much was I really do doing to help others, or better yet, the world around me?
Then I realized it. After taking a few classes at a Brooklyn bakery (that I truly accredit for giving me this new found passion in baking), I was hit by an idea. I will bake, sell, and donate what I can to charities that I fully support. My mission to not only bake, but to share a little bit of love to others in need. For every sale of $12, I will donate $1 to the customers choice between the three that I have provided. As my business grows, so will the dollar amount that I donate. Buy more, help more. It's that simple.
And the nugget names for my baked goods? That comes from my nickname, Nugget. Yes, it's true-most of my family, friends, and always my husband, refer to me to my favorite nickname Nugget and is a lil' way for me to put myself in all of my creations.
Help me, help you, help others. Spreading a lil' nugget of love...everyday.
